The vision of the Future “Internet of People, Things and Services, IoPTS” is gaining momentum in the emergent academic, industrial and market innovation arenas. Many key enabling technologies are already emerging such as secure middleware and service-oriented architectures, virtualisation, RFID, and sensor networking. The vision of cloud computing (eCloud) further motivates interest in research and innovation to underpin ubiquitous IoPTS integration. However the promises of the Future Internet in empowering cooperativity support to underpin optimal eMobility, eHealth, eSecurity, eCloud and eMedia services delivery have to be realised in a societally safe, trustworthy, ethical and acceptable manner as well as in increasingly scalable, sustainable and affordable ways; so as to push forwards the frontiers of digital inclusivity amongst citizens. The Hydra partners University of Reading and Fraunhofer SIT are organising this 4th IoPTS Workshop, which will discuss the above issues through theoretical and applied research presentations, prototypes demonstrations and discussion panels. 4th European Workshop on Combining Context with Trust, Security, and Privacy Co-located with CENTRIC 2010 3rd International Conference on Advances in Human-oriented and Personalized Mechanisms, Technologies, and Services. CAT2010 is an European event that follows the context-Aware and Trust initiatives that have been running in the past years. It will offer scientists and engineers that are active in the areas of context-awareness and of privacy, security, and trust the opportunity to sit together and to discuss the state of the art, to identify open and emerging problems, to share research experiences, and to propose future research directions. Contributions, divided into three categories, should focus on combining and balancing Privacy, Security, and Trust with Context-awareness. Mario Hoffmann from Fraunhofer SIT sits on the organising committee for this event.

First International Workshop on the Web of Things (WoT 2010) @ PerCom 2010

The 1st International Workshop on the Web of Things will be held in conjunction with the 8th IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communication (PerCom'10). The world of embedded devices has experienced radical changes over the past few years as real-world objects can now easily connect to the Internet. This convergence of physical computing devices (wireless sensor networks, mobile phones, embedded computers, etc.) and the Internet provides new design opportunities and challenges. The Internet of Things has mainly focused on establishing connectivity in a variety of challenging and constrained networking environments, and the next logical step in the evolution in pervasive computing builds on top of network connectivity by focusing on the application layer: how to develop ubiquitous computing applications on top of heterogeneous devices? The Web of Things is the vision that brings embedded devices into the Web by using Web standards as application protocol to interact with things. This workshop aims at bringing together the pervasive computing and Web communities to explore the possibilities for using the core principles and technologies of modern Web architecture (e.g., HTTP, REST, Atom, JSON) for seamless integration of things into the Web and developing applications on top of web-enabled devices (physical mashups). Hydra partners will be attending the workshop.

ICT4EE: ICT for Energy Efficiency

After the ICT4EE 2009 High Level Event which aimed to accord visibility to the potential of ICTs in enabling energy efficiency, this 2010 event aims to become a vehicle to drive progress in the transition to an energy-efficient and low-carbon economy following the terms of the "Recommendation C(2009) 7604" adopted by the European Commission on October 9th 2009. Through the Recommendation, the Commission calls on the ICT sector to agree on common methodologies for measuring energy consumption and carbon emissions by 2010. Furthermore, addressing EU Member States and the ICT sector, it aims to unlock energy efficiency potential through more public-private partnership initiatives and also through partnerships between the ICT industry and defined strategic sectors. The Hydra consortium attends the ICT for Energy Efficiency event in order to share and discuss the Hydra results with respect to energy efficiency.

The Internet of People, Things and Services (IoPTS) embraces a range of exciting internet-enabled technologies for individual life/work-style support as well as an opportunity for commercial and business exploitation of emerging technology platforms e.g. to underpin the vision of Ambient Assisted Living. The IoPTS are to support pervasive ambient intelligence of objects and/or services through 1) context-based computation and 2) privacy-security-preferences-QoS-aware selection, resolution and execution of “smart” service-oriented model-driven systems and services. This requires a framework for semantic-cooperative interoperability and security resolution so as to adequately support the required controlled orchestration of tasks within sensor/enterprise environments (eco-systems) supported by context management, communications, resources management, and context-sensitive privacy policy maintenance and enactment (to be fulfilled on-device or proxy-enabled depending on the device resources). Hydra partners will be attending this workshop.

Ninth IEEE International Working Conference on Source Code Analysis and Manipulation, co-located with the 25th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM 2009). The aim of this working conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners working on theory, techniques and applications which concern analysis and/or manipulation of the source code of computer systems. While much attention in the wider software engineering community is properly directed towards other aspects of systems development and evolution, such as specification, design and requirements engineering, it is the source code that contains the only precise description of the behaviour of the system. The analysis and manipulation of source code thus remains a pressing concern. Fraunhofer FIT presented the paper “Maintaining Fine-grained Code Metadata Regardless of Moving, Copying and Merging”.

Workshop on Methods & Tools for Computer Supported Collaborative Creativity Process: Linking creativity & informal learning within the EC-TEL 2009 conference. Creativity is best described as the human capacity regularly to solve problems in a way that is initially novel but ultimately acceptable in a culture. Creativity process is an intense collaborative process of generating and exploring ideas meant to contribute to innovative solution of particular problems. During this process, team members go through cycles of divergence, in which new ideas are generated and explored, and convergence, in which new ideas are valued and detailed. The scope of this workshop will be to exchange ideas and know-how about the various methods and tools that efficiently and effectively support the computer-based collaborative creativity process and offer informal learning opportunities. Fraunhofer FIT presented paper ”Collaborative Moderation – Fostering Creativity with a Corporate Wiki” at the workshop.

Context awareness is the notion of computer systems that dynamically adapt their behavior to a changing environment. Such applications are useful in many situations ranging from general human-computer interaction over business process execution to healthcare or logistics. However, mainstream programming languages and tools do not offer dedicated support for adaptive properties. Additionally, as context awareness is an application requirement, it should already be addressed at the modeling level. This workshop attempts to bring together researchers from the disparate communities to exchange ideas, establish a common research program, and foster new collaborations. The second year demonstrator showed a conceptual healthcare assistance system for patients at their homes.The system demonstrates how sensors and devices, which measure and monitor the status of a patient, are networked into a complete system.

The 1st International Workshop on the Web of Things will be held in conjunction with the 8th IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communication (PerCom'10). The world of embedded devices has experienced radical changes over the past few years as real-world objects can now easily connect to the Internet. This convergence of physical computing devices (wireless sensor networks, mobile phones, embedded computers, etc.) and the Internet provides new design opportunities and challenges. The Internet of Things has mainly focused on establishing connectivity in a variety of challenging and constrained networking environments, and the next logical step in the evolution in pervasive computing builds on top of network connectivity by focusing on the application layer: how to develop ubiquitous computing applications on top of heterogeneous devices? The Web of Things is the vision that brings embedded devices into the Web by using Web standards as application protocol to interact with things. This workshop aims at bringing together the pervasive computing and Web communities to explore the possibilities for using the core principles and technologies of modern Web architecture (e.g., HTTP, REST, Atom, JSON) for seamless integration of things into the Web and developing applications on top of web-enabled devices (physical mashups). After the ICT4EE 2009 High Level Event which aimed to accord visibility to the potential of ICTs in enabling energy efficiency, this 2010 event aims to become a vehicle to drive progress in the transition to an energy-efficient and low-carbon economy following the terms of the "Recommendation C(2009) 7604" adopted by the European Commission on October 9th 2009. Through the Recommendation, the Commission calls on the ICT sector to agree on common methodologies for measuring energy consumption and carbon emissions by 2010. Furthermore, addressing EU Member States and the ICT sector, it aims to unlock energy efficiency potential through more public-private partnership initiatives and also through partnerships between the ICT industry and defined strategic sectors. The Hydra consortium attends the ICT for Energy Efficiency event in order to share and discuss the Hydra results with respect to energy efficiency.

The Internet of People, Things and Services (IoPTS) embraces a range of exciting internet-enabled technologies for individual life/work-style support as well as an opportunity for commercial and business exploitation of emerging technology platforms e.g. to underpin the vision of Ambient Assisted Living. The IoPTS are to support pervasive ambient intelligence of objects and/or services through 1) context-based computation and 2) privacy-security-preferences-QoS-aware selection, resolution and execution of “smart” service-oriented model-driven systems and services. Workshop on Methods & Tools for Computer Supported Collaborative Creativity Process: Linking creativity & informal learning within the EC-TEL 2009 conference. Creativity is best described as the human capacity regularly to solve problems in a way that is initially novel but ultimately acceptable in a culture. Creativity process is an intense collaborative process of generating and exploring ideas meant to contribute to innovative solution of particular problems. During this process, team members go through cycles of divergence, in which new ideas are generated and explored, and convergence, in which new ideas are valued and detailed. The scope of this workshop will be to exchange ideas and know-how about the various methods and tools that efficiently and effectively support the computer-based collaborative creativity process and offer informal learning opportunities. Fraunhofer FIT presented paper ”Collaborative Moderation – Fostering Creativity with a Corporate Wiki” at the workshop.

Context awareness is the notion of computer systems that dynamically adapt their behavior to a changing environment. Such applications are useful in many situations ranging from general human-computer interaction over business process execution to healthcare or logistics. However, mainstream programming languages and tools do not offer dedicated support for adaptive properties. Additionally, as context awareness is an application requirement, it should already be addressed at the modeling level.
